Twilio and KPN Launch Nationwide RCS Business Messaging

As brands seek more interactive and secure ways to communicate with customers, messaging platforms are evolving beyond traditional SMS to support richer digital experiences. A new partnership between Twilio and KPN is set to expand RCS Business Messaging capabilities across the Netherlands, enabling companies to engage consumers through more dynamic mobile communication.

Twilio, a customer engagement platform known for powering real time communications for global brands, announced a collaboration with Dutch telecom provider KPN to deploy nationwide RCS Business Messaging. The initiative, unveiled at Mobile World Congress, is supported by Google’s RCS infrastructure and aims to make the Netherlands one of Europe’s newest markets with full scale RCS availability for enterprises.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, represents the next evolution of mobile messaging. The technology retains the reach and simplicity of SMS while adding interactive features such as verified sender identities, multimedia content, carousels, and action buttons. These capabilities enable businesses to deliver branded messaging experiences that are more engaging and measurable than traditional text messages.

With KPN playing a central role in the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, the rollout enables nationwide coverage across major mobile operators. This milestone allows enterprises to deploy RCS Business Messaging campaigns across the Dutch market at scale.

The platform is powered by Google’s RCS for Business framework, which manages brand onboarding and verification for Android devices. Expanded device support is expected in the coming years as additional mobile platforms adopt the technology. Apple’s iOS ecosystem is expected to expand compatibility with RCS messaging capabilities in 2026, potentially increasing the reach of these campaigns further.

Through the integration with Twilio’s communications platform, businesses can add RCS as a messaging channel alongside existing SMS and MMS campaigns without requiring code changes. This approach allows companies to transition to richer communication formats while maintaining the reliability and reach of traditional messaging systems.

Another advantage of the platform is its ability to provide engagement insights. Businesses can access delivery confirmations, read receipts, and interaction data that help measure the effectiveness of messaging campaigns. In cases where RCS is not supported on a device, the system automatically falls back to SMS, ensuring consistent message delivery.

The nationwide rollout is expected to create new opportunities for brands operating in the Netherlands. With access to verified messaging identities and interactive media formats, companies can communicate with customers directly through native messaging apps while strengthening trust and improving engagement.

According to Twilio’s State of Customer Engagement Report, personalized communication significantly increases customer loyalty, highlighting the growing importance of interactive messaging channels in modern marketing strategies.

David Copsey, RVP of International Wholesale & Carrier Relations at Twilio, said: “Nationwide operator coverage is a significant step forward for RCS for Business in the Netherlands. Together with KPN and Google, we are creating the foundation for large-scale adoption, giving brands the opportunity to engage millions of consumers with secure, branded and interactive messaging as device support continues to expand.”

As more telecommunications providers adopt the technology, RCS Business Messaging is expected to become a key channel for customer engagement. The Twilio and KPN partnership signals a broader shift toward richer mobile communication experiences that combine the reliability of SMS with the interactive capabilities of modern messaging platforms.
