New Ahrefs Research Shows ‘Trust but Verify’ Mentality Among AI Marketers
Quality of human-written content falls, while AI content improves
News summary:
- Marketers are warming to AI-generated content: 24% now say AI content is higher quality than human-written content, up 14% from 2025, while the share who say human content is better fell to 57% from 65%.
- Despite growing confidence in AI quality, human oversight is increasing: 89% manually check AI-generated content, up from 80% in 2025, and 66% trust AI-written content only when a human reviews it before use.
- Claude has surged to the top of marketers’ AI toolkits, used by 84% of AI users surveyed, ahead of ChatGPT (75%) and Gemini (57%).
Ahrefs, an SEO and AI marketing intelligence platform, today released results from its 2026 State of AI in Content Marketing Survey, revealing a notable shift in how marketers view AI-generated content. While 57% still say human-written content is higher quality than AI-generated content, that figure has fallen from 65% in 2025. At the same time, the share who say AI content is better climbed from 14% to 24%.

But growing confidence in AI isn’t translating into less oversight. Instead, marketers are increasingly adopting a “trust but verify” approach: 89% of AI users manually check AI-generated content, up from 80% last year, and 66% trust AI-written content only when a human reviews it before use.
“Marketers are clearly becoming more confident in what AI can produce, but that doesn’t mean they’re handing over the keys,” said Ryan Law, Director of Content Marketing, Ahrefs. “AI is becoming an everyday part of the content workflow, and as teams use it for more sophisticated work, human judgment and quality control are becoming even more important.”
AI Content Gains Ground, But Human Review Goes With It
The gap between perceptions of human and AI-generated content is narrowing. While 57% of respondents still say human-written content is higher quality, this number decreased from 65% in 2025. Meanwhile, 24% now say AI content is better, up from 14% in 2025.
Yet marketers aren’t becoming less discerning as AI improves. Human oversight is actually increasing:
- 89% of AI users manually check AI-generated content, up from 80% in 2025.
- 66% trust AI-generated written content only when a human reviews it before use; just 3% generally trust it without additional review.
- 43% work with subject-matter experts to check AI content quality and 33% use an editor, while less than 1% say they don’t check AI content quality at all.
The findings point to a growing distinction between using AI and relying on it without oversight: as marketers become more comfortable with the technology, human review remains a core part of the workflow.
AI is Turning Content Production into a Faster, Higher-Output Machine
AI adoption is nearly universal among respondents, with 93% using AI to create or help create content, up from 87% in 2025. Adoption rises to 97% among upper management respondents.
That adoption is translating into significant productivity gains. Among marketers using AI, 85% say they are producing content faster, including 49% who say they are working “much quicker” and 36% who say they are working “slightly quicker.”
These gains are even more pronounced among leadership: 62% of upper management respondents say AI has made content production “much quicker,” 13 percentage points higher than the total respondents.
The findings build on Ahrefs’ 2025 research, which found AI users published a median of 17 pieces of content per month compared with 12 among non-AI users – 42% more. The 2026 findings suggest AI’s productivity impact is extending beyond content volume to how quickly teams can get work done.

AI is Moving Deeper Into the Content Workflow
Brainstorming (78%), creating outlines (76%), improving content (76%) and editing or rewriting (70%) remain the most common ways marketers use AI. But some of the biggest year-over-year increases are happening in more specialized work:
- Data analysis jumped from 28% in 2025 to 60% in 2026.
- Image creation increased from 19% to 44%.
- Topic identification doubled from 23% to 46%.
- Creating content from scratch rose from 44% to 55%.
Claude Surges as Marketers Diversify Their AI Toolkits
Claude was selected by 84% of AI users surveyed, followed by ChatGPT at 75% and Gemini at 57%. Upper management reported a similar mix, with 79% using Claude, 73% using ChatGPT, and 55% using Gemini. In 2025, ChatGPT was the dominant primary tool among respondents, followed by Gemini and Claude.
