25th June 25 2025, London – Ericsson has stated that it plans on continuing to invest in and thus develop 6G research in the UK. The company is continuing to build on and expand upon a research centre it launched in 2022.

The 6G research centre will be looking at things such as energy saving networks, security, smart networks systems and solutions for how to architect resilient 6G networks in the future. The centre will also investigate concepts such as multi-TRP and ISAC; these aren’t buzzwords, but advanced ways of increasing capability and performance of networks.

Ericsson is working with researchers, students, universities and other telecom partners in the UK as a way to continue to develop these new concepts and technologies that will benefit not only the UK, but the world at large. They were also previously involved in projects such as REASON and TUDOR, which were already previous wins.

This research will also help create future guidelines for 6G, that can be broadly adopted around the world. Then there is also the UK government’s Digital and Technologies Sector Plan, which contributes to the same agenda. The government is investing £370 million to help the UK become a significant player in future technologies.

Telecoms Minister Chris Bryant explained that this shows the UK is a fantastic place for tech and innovation. “We are building tomorrow’s tech and boosting the economy,” he said

Ericsson’s Magnus Frodigh explained that Ericsson’s research in the UK is driving how the world will use 6G. “We’re not just testing ideas we are building the future here,” he said

Katherine Ainley from Ericsson UK said they have been in the UK for over 100 years and are pleased to continue with the research. “We’re working with universities and network companies to keep the UK at the head of digital tech,” she added

6G is not here yet, but they estimate it will roll out 2030. It will facilitate cool stuff such as smart farming, improved healthcare, robots that think for themselves, and more immersive virtual reality.

Ericsson’s work in the UK means the country will be geared up for it all.
